The Dysfunction Files, Episode 19: Root Canals & Rabbit Holes: The Dental Disasters Your Dentist Isn’t Telling You About

Imagine settling into your dentist’s chair. The office smells faintly of mint and antiseptic, and your dentist, smiling warmly through their crisp white mask, assures you gently, “This won’t hurt at all…”

Sounds comforting, right? But here’s a disturbing thought: it might not hurt right now, but what if something far more insidious is quietly taking root in your mouth – silently fueling chronic disease, autoimmune conditions, and even cancer?

Because here’s the chilling truth: beneath those pearly whites, hidden infections and toxic materials could be slowly sabotaging your health. Your dentist probably won’t mention it. Big Pharma definitely doesn’t want you thinking about it. Which is, of course, the material my dreams and nightmares are made of – and why we will certainly be talking about it. The dark side of conventional dentistry.

I’m Dr. Kristen Lindgren, and welcome back to ‘The Dysfunction Files,’ where we pull back the wizard’s curtain on health’s darkest mysteries and shine a bright, uncomfortable light into the corners that the powerful elites, Big Pharma, Big Medicine, and Big Media hope you never look.

Buckle up, friends, truth seekers, and anyone brave enough to question the status quo – you know – you all. This episode might just change how you see your teeth, your dentist, and your health forever.

Let’s get into it.

Root Cause Documentary

In 2019, a groundbreaking and deeply controversial documentary titled “Root Cause” hit Netflix—and then mysteriously disappeared shortly thereafter. I’ll include a link to the Youtube Movie where you can watch it (for now). Dentists across the nation collectively gasped in horror, branding it as pseudoscience. Big Pharma quickly circled the wagons, labeling the film as dangerous misinformation, and poof! It was gone.

But what exactly was it about this provocative little film that caused so much gaslighting – I mean, such an uproar?

Could it be because the practice of conventional dentistry openly questioned the industry’s sacred cash cow—the root canal? Could it be because the filmmakers suggested, through compelling testimonials and unsettling research, that seemingly routine dental procedures might actually be linked to terrifying diseases like cancer, autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety, depression, and more?

This filmmaker, who also happened to be the film’s protagonis,t dared to ask:

  • Could that root canal you got five years ago somehow be triggering your chronic fatigue and anxiety?
  • Is it possible that hidden infections deep within your jawbone are silently poisoning your immune system, day after day?
  • Could breast cancer—or any cancer, for that matter—really begin inside your mouth?

These are uncomfortable questions, to say the least, and they’re exactly why the commentary in this film became dental enemy number one.

Buckle up—because we’re going down the rabbit hole of dentistry’s darkest secrets, exploring what your dentist either doesn’t know, doesn’t believe, or isn’t willing to tell you.

Ready? Let’s dig in… carefully and allegedly of course.

Dental Health’s Dirty Little Secrets

1. Root Canals: The Zombie Teeth

Root canals are often promoted as routine and necessary procedures – saving your teeth and keeping your smile intact. Dentists are taught to save a broken or dying tooth at all costs. Because you know, science. We don’t treat anything else in medicine like this. You have an infection in your lungs, we treat it. A resistant infection in your diabetic toe? The toe’s gone. Not so with your teeth. Teeth are actually living organs, each packed with miles of microscopic tubules (yes, literally miles).

When you get a root canal, your dentist removes the infected nerve, essentially killing the tooth but leaving behind a perfect environment for bacteria and harmful endotoxins to live on into infinity. Research done as far back as the early 1900s demonstrated that all extracted root canals – symptomatic or not, harbored infection. Your mouth is filthy. It is impossible to sterilize. These microscopic nasties can then lurk inside your tooth indefinitely, beyond the reach of your immune system or antibiotics. “You’re going to need a root canal” ends in a literal horror movie. Look away if you have a quesy stomach – this is the procedure.

They drill into your tooth. Suck out the root. Fill it with a rubber-like substance called gutta percha, seal it with ‘cement,’ and cover it with some sort of crown or composite filling, and voilà.

As a result, your immune system is stuck in a never-ending battle—a constant game of whack-a-mole that results in low-grade chronic inflammation throughout your body. This hidden inflammation can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog and memory issues
  • Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus
  • Increased risk of developing cancers
  • Anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders

It’s no wonder root canals have quietly become one of the most controversial topics in dentistry today. Despite mounting evidence and anecdotal stories linking them to serious health conditions, the dental establishment remains largely dismissive.

Could your “saved tooth” actually be harming your health? It’s time to consider the evidence—and ask yourself some tough questions your dentist might never bring up.

2. Cavitations: Your Jawbone’s Secret Sinkhole

Think having a tooth pulled solves the issue? Think again. Extractions, especially wisdom tooth removals, can leave behind tiny pockets of dead, infected bone known as cavitations. When a tooth is extracted, the periodontal ligament that holds the tooth to the bone also needs to be removed so the bone can fill in and heal correctly. If not, you can end up with a pocket of completely painless infection in the jawbone. These hidden infections are nearly invisible on standard dental X-rays and typically go undetected for years.

Holistic and biological dentists who utilize advanced imaging techniques like Cone Beam scans are often stunned by the frequency and severity of these hidden infections. These secret sinkholes in your jawbone harbor harmful bacteria and potent toxins, quietly poisoning you and burdening your immune system day after day.

Possible symptoms linked to untreated cavitations include:

  • Persistent fatigue and low energy
  • Unexplained neurological issues, dizziness, and cognitive decline
  • Symptoms similar to Lyme disease—joint pain, headaches, chronic infections
  • Immune dysfunction leading to autoimmune conditions

So, that wisdom tooth extraction you barely remember from high school could be the source of chronic illness you’ve been struggling with for years. If you’re suffering from unexplained health issues, it might be time to consider looking deeper—quite literally—in your mouth.

3. Mercury Fillings: Heavy Metal Madness

Mercury might be one of the most toxic substances on planet Earth, yet unbelievably, it’s still casually used by many dentists in amalgam fillings. Yep—that silver filling in your tooth isn’t pure silver; it’s about 50% mercury, continuously releasing toxic vapor into your body every time you chew, drink hot beverages, or even brush your teeth.

Mercury toxicity can wreak havoc on your health, triggering:

  • Chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction
  • Neurological disorders, memory loss, and cognitive decline
  • Autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Mood swings, anxiety, and depression

Despite mounting evidence, many dental authorities, including the American Dental Association, continue to insist mercury amalgam fillings are “safe.”

4. Chronic Oral Infections: The Silent Flame

Think gingivitis and periodontal disease are merely bad breath problems? Yeah, no. These seemingly mild oral conditions can trigger systemic inflammation throughout your entire body. Remember your mouth is filthy. Every time your gums bleed, bacteria enter directly into your bloodstream, causing widespread inflammation – the same kind of inflammation linked to heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and increased cancer risk.

Science Speaks (But Dentists Aren’t Listening)

Sidebar: Weston Price – The Rabbit Guy They’d Rather You Forgot

Dr. Weston A. Price was a dentist in the early 1900s who believed that root canals could cause chronic disease. He extracted infected teeth from patients with arthritis, heart disease, and more – then implanted those teeth under the skin of rabbits. *Why. Just Why.* According to his findings, the rabbits developed the same diseases that the people with the sick teeth had.

His work, known as the focal infection theory, was eventually discarded by mainstream medicine, labeled “unscientific,” “flawed,” and “discredited.” But holistic practitioners still find it fascinating – and eerily consistent with what they see in practice.

Was it garbage science? Another conspiracy theory? Maybe. Sometimes the only difference between conspiracy theory and conspiracy fact is just, well, time.

The Energy Pathways Hiding in Your Mouth

Here’s where things get a little woo-hoo – but just hang in here with me a minute. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine and energy medicine practitioners around the world, each tooth is energetically linked to different organs, systems, and meridians in the body.

These energy pathways – called meridians – are like energetic highways that connect everything from your kidneys to your sinuses. In this model, teeth aren’t just tools for chewing – they’re energetic nodes. Disrupt one, and you could disrupt the entire circuit.

Tooth-Organ Connection Examples:

  • Upper front teeth (8 and 9) — linked to the kidneys and bladder
  • Upper canines — liver and gallbladder
  • Molars — stomach, pancreas, large intestine
  • Wisdom teeth — heart and small intestine

So when a tooth becomes infected, removed, or root-canaled, it’s not just a structural loss – it could be like pulling the plug on the energetic flow to a vital organ system.

This might explain why some patients report improvement in heart rhythm, gut health, or immune function after dental extractions or cavitation surgery – especially when done by a practitioner who understands this energy-organ connection.

Western medicine may scoff at this, but it’s hard to ignore when a patient’s heart palpitations resolve after removing a root-canaled molar linked to the heart meridian. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe energy medicine has a few secrets we’re only beginning to rediscover.

If you’re the kind of person who vibes with acupuncture, bioenergetics, or frequency-based healing – consider this one more piece of the puzzle. Your mouth isn’t just biomechanical. It’s bioenergetic.

Patient Stories

These aren’t just spooky anecdotes whispered around the holistic health campfire—many of these stories have been reported by patients featured in holistic dental case studies, and integrative practitioners worldwide. While they may not show up in The New England Journal of Medicine, they’re compelling, consistent, and in many cases, life-changing:

  • A woman’s breast cancer resolved after removing her root canal. A woman, let’s call her Brenda, had undergone standard cancer treatment for her breast cancer, but it wasn’t until her biological dentist identified an infected root-canaled tooth on the same meridian as her breast tumor – and removed it – that her cancer markers dropped and her recurrence disappeared. Her oncologist called it a miracle. She called it dental surgery.
  • Chronic fatigue vanished after cavitation treatment. One patient, let’s call him Jake, had spent years chasing down adrenal fatigue, mold, and Lyme disease with only minor improvements. A Cone Beam CT finally revealed a massive cavitation in his lower jaw – likely from a wisdom tooth extraction in his teens. Within weeks of cleaning it out, his energy levels rebounded.
  • Autoimmune symptoms improved dramatically following safe mercury amalgam removal. A patient, let’s call her Jane, with Hashimoto’s and rheumatoid arthritis saw her antibody levels drop by more than half after removing eight amalgam fillings using strict SMART protocols – more on that in a sec. Her joint pain faded, brain fog lifted. Her rheumatologist was baffled.

Are these anecdotes? Yes. Are they worth ignoring? Absolutely not.

Sometimes the missing link in chronic disease isn’t hiding in your labs—it’s hiding in your mouth.

What Are SMART Protocols?

SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, a safety protocol created by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). It’s designed to protect both the patient and the dental team from mercury vapor exposure during amalgam filling removal.

Unlike the standard “drill and fill” approach, SMART-certified dentists use:

  • Rubber dam isolation to contain debris
  • High-volume suction with air filtration
  • External oxygen or air supply for the patient
  • Protective gowns, masks, and head coverings for everyone involved (yes, it looks like a scene from Contagion)
  • Room air purifiers and mercury vapor evacuation systems
  • Post-removal detox support like activated charcoal, vitamin C, and binders

Conventional dentists may drill out your amalgams like they’re carving a Thanksgiving turkey. But biological dentists trained in SMART know better—because mercury vapor is no joke.

Action Steps—What to Actually Do

If you’re watching this with a hand halfway to your mouth, wondering what kind of dental landmines are lurking beneath the surface—you’re not alone. The good news is, you’re not powerless. There are safe, strategic steps you can take to start unraveling the mouth-body connection and finally get to the root (pun fully intended) of chronic health issues.

Start by finding a holistic or biological dentist—these practitioners are trained not just in dental mechanics, but in how oral health affects the whole body. They know how to properly evaluate for hidden infections, identify cavitations, and understand the risks associated with root canals and mercury fillings.

Most will recommend a Cone Beam CT scan, which offers a 3D view of the jaw and can reveal infections or cavitations that standard X-rays miss entirely.

If you have mercury fillings, consider safe removal using SMART protocols to avoid re-toxifying yourself during the process.

And don’t forget the power of supportive therapies – like ozone injections, oral probiotics, oil pulling, binders, and lymphatic drainage – to help your body detox and rebalance after years of silent dental sabotage.

It’s not just about saving your smile – it might be about saving your life.

Closing: “The Mouth-Body Connection They Don’t Want You to Know”

Your teeth aren’t just tools for chewing—they’re portals to the rest of your body. What happens in your mouth doesn’t stay in your mouth. Root canals, cavitations, and mercury fillings may not cause every chronic disease, but they’re often a missing piece in a much bigger puzzle we call biotoxin illness.

That includes mold, parasites, Lyme, heavy metals, glyphosate, EMFs, and yes—possibly that infected molar from 2006 that’s been quietly fuming in your jaw like a tiny microbial Chernobyl.

We live in a toxic soup. We eat toxic food. We breathe toxic air. And we endure toxic relationships. Why wouldn’t our dental procedures be part of that conversation too?

Twenty-five million root canals are performed in the U.S. every year. If they’re not doing anything positive for your overall health—and might actually be making it worse—it’s worth asking whether it’s time to retire this sacred cow of modern dentistry and replace it with something smarter, safer, and more biologically sound.

Your mouth is part of your body. It’s time the medical system started treating it that way.

Next time your dentist says, “This won’t hurt a bit,” remember—it might hurt more than they think.
